Online Casino Project >>> Poker Tips >>>Basics of the Online Shootout Poker Tournament

One of the common types of poker tournaments found at the best online poker rooms (please see our Poker Room Reviews) are shootouts. Similar to a steps tournament, online shootouts are a combination of a series of single-table tournaments, culminating in a final table with previous single table tournament winners. In other words, players either advance to the next round of games or are kicked out of the tournaments. This is what makes this style different than steps tournaments, which players can still participate in after being bumped down to lower tables.

Step tournaments also allow single table winners to choose when they would like to enter the next round of online games.  For instance, if a player wins the first step of the tournament they will receive a buy-in for step two, which they can choose to enter up to weeks after winning step one. The  structures are also different for shootout poker tournaments. One shootout may only give out a single seat to the next single table tournament, while another shootout may give two or three seats to the the next table, depending on the number of participating tables.

Another aspect of online shootout tournaments that poker players prefer is the prize structure. Rather than the final table winner taking the entire jackpot, the winnings are disbursed amongst the individual table winners.  Although the final first place winner will receive significantly more than the other players, shootouts are usually structured so that all the players at the final table will receive a portion of the buy-ins.

In terms of gambling strategy, the way in which the shootout poker tournament is structured (remember each online tournament is structured differently) should dictate how you play your cards and bets. In tournaments where one player per table advances to the next table, it is advised to play more aggressively, since the competition is more concentrated and single players will be holding more chips.  If, however, several players are permitted to advance to the next round, you will have the luxury of not having to play so aggressive.

If this happens to be the case, it is advised to put your focus in maintaining an above average sized chip stack. By doing so in conjunction with a conscious effort to avoid standoffs with other players, (and pursuing a campaign of blind stealing), your stack will stay strong, and you will be a strong contender for being one of the last standing at the final poker table.
